Have you heard of the painted rock movement?
It's a great way to spread happiness throughout the valley. Our local community in Las Vegas has created an amazing group called Las Vegas Painted Rocks. The concept is simple. If you find an art rock, you can either keep the rock or re-hide it for someone else to find . You can also paint your own rocks to hide for others. All of the rocks are created with a positive mind set. They come in all shapes, colors and sizes. We love the bright colored ones that can be spotted from far away. It's fun for all ages. Luscian has found a handful of these beautiful rocks around the parks in our community. He lights up with excitement and looks forward to re-hiding them.
We recently painted our own rocks to hide. This event was put together by a family member of mine who organizes summer activities for kids and their parents. We met at a local park under a shaded picnic area. Everyone had such a great time getting messy with paint and being creative.
Luscian choose an egg shaped rock. He decided to paint it green. The paint dried pretty quick. I then used duct tape to cover the green in sections and let ginger boy put a second layer of paint. This time he choose blue. After that dried we noticed it started looking like a Ninja Turtle. I used a few other colors of paint and black permanent marker to give it the finished look.
While the rest of the rocks were drying we took a few minutes to checkout the playground. It was our first time going to this park.
Once we got home I gave Luscian a much needed bath to wash the paint off of him. He took a nap and when he got up we headed to the park to hide the rock. Before we left we added a label to the back of it that said #LasVegasPaintedRocks @TheRealSeanEverett. This way when someone finds it they can post it on social media with a tag.
Does your community have their own painted rocks group? If not, consider creating your own one on FB. The goal would be to gather everyone around the country to participate in this positive movement. It wouldn't surprise me if you started seeing a few of our rocks in your city. If you are interested in painting your own inspirational rocks to hide the activity is simple to do and you need very little supplies.
First - Be sure to cover the surface you plan on painting on with some type of protection like newspaper.
2nd - You will need a variety of sizes of river rocks. These can be found at Lowes, Home Depot or maybe even out in your front yard. Please be courteous of others landscaping and do not take from someone elses yard or business.
3rd - You will need paint, brushes, paint tray, water to wash brush
4th - Permanent markers if you plan on writing on them or adding details.
5th - Paint sealer to protect your rock from outdoor elements like rain.
